There are 2 different types of polyethylene (PE):

LDPE: Low density polyethylene
Feels smooth and soft

HDPE: High density polyethylene
Feels harder and makes a crackling sound when manipulated. The thickness of HD can be up to 50% less than LD in order to obtain the same strength.
